VIOLATIONS

Reduction

Also known as: fine reduction, partial reduction, reduced fine

What is a Reduction?

A reduction is a hearing outcome where the adjudicator finds the respondent partially liable and lowers the fine amount rather than dismissing the violation entirely. Reductions are common at DOF parking hearings and can range from a small percentage to a substantial portion of the original fine.

For example, a $115 double-parking ticket might be reduced to $57.50 (50% reduction) if the driver provides evidence of mitigating circumstances, such as a medical emergency or confusing signage. The reduced amount becomes the new amount due, and penalty escalation (if any has accrued) is typically adjusted accordingly.

Reductions are more common than full dismissals — NYC adjudicators often prefer to reduce fines rather than throw tickets out entirely. For fleet operators, contesting tickets that have strong mitigating evidence can yield meaningful savings through reductions even when a full dismissal is unlikely. Clear Plates tracks hearing outcomes across your fleet so you can see your reduction rates and identify which violation types are most worth contesting.
