Red Light Camera Intersection

Also known as: red light camera location, photo-enforced intersection, red light enforcement intersection

What is a Red Light Camera Intersection?

A red light camera intersection is an intersection equipped with automated camera systems that detect and photograph vehicles that enter the intersection after the traffic signal turns red. NYC operates approximately 150 red light cameras at intersections identified as having high rates of red-light-related crashes or fatalities.

The camera system captures two images: one showing the vehicle entering the intersection after the light turns red, and a second showing the vehicle in the intersection. Both the front and rear of the vehicle are photographed, and the license plate is captured for automated processing. A violation notice with a $50 fine is mailed to the registered owner. The system includes a brief grace period (typically 0.3 seconds after the light turns red) to account for vehicles already in the intersection when the signal changes.

For fleet operators, red light camera intersections tend to generate fewer violations than speed cameras but at consistent locations. If a particular intersection repeatedly appears in your violation data, it may indicate a confusing signal pattern or an intersection where your drivers are routinely rushing through yellow lights. Clear Plates identifies repeat-violation intersections so you can address the specific locations driving your red light camera costs.
