Fire Lane Violation
Also known as: fire lane ticket, fire zone violation, fire access violation
What is a Fire Lane Violation?
A fire lane violation is issued when a vehicle is parked or stopped in a designated fire lane — an area marked (usually with red paint or signage) that must remain clear for emergency vehicle access at all times. Fire lanes are common near building entrances, loading docks adjacent to buildings, and along the fronts of commercial properties.
Base fines for fire lane violations are $115, and vehicles may be towed immediately without warning. In some cases, FDNY can also issue separate violations, compounding the cost. Fire lane enforcement is treated as a public safety priority, so there is very little flexibility or leniency at hearings for these violations.
For delivery fleets, fire lanes are a tempting but dangerous shortcut — they're often the closest available spot to a building entrance. Drivers may think a quick 2-minute stop is harmless, but enforcement can be immediate and the consequences severe. Clear Plates flags fire lane violations as high-priority and helps fleet operators identify drivers or locations where fire lane stops are becoming a pattern that needs to be addressed.
