ENFORCEMENT

Collections

Also known as: debt collection, third-party collections, collection agency

What is a Collections?

Collections refers to the process where unpaid violation judgment debt is sent to third-party debt collection agencies contracted by the City of New York. Once a violation has been in judgment for an extended period without payment, NYC refers the debt to outside collectors who pursue the registered vehicle owner through phone calls, letters, and potential credit reporting.

Collection agencies add their own fees and surcharges on top of the existing judgment balance, further inflating the total amount owed. The debt may also appear on the vehicle owner's credit report, potentially affecting business credit lines and financing terms. Collection accounts can remain on credit reports for up to 7 years even after they are paid.

For fleet operators, violations reaching the collections stage indicates a serious breakdown in violation management. At this point, the original fine has typically doubled or tripled with penalties and interest, collection fees are piling on, and credit impacts may be affecting the business. The goal is to never let violations reach this stage. Clear Plates identifies judgment-status violations early and prioritizes them for payment long before collection referral becomes a risk.
