Speed Camera
Also known as: school zone camera, speed cam, automated speed enforcement
What is a Speed Camera?
A speed camera is an automated enforcement device that captures images of vehicles exceeding the posted speed limit in designated NYC school zones. NYC operates over 2,000 speed cameras under the School Zone Speed Camera Program, active on school days from 6 AM to 10 PM (expanded from the original school-hours-only window).
Speed camera violations carry a $50 base fine regardless of how fast you were going. The ticket is mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle — no points are added to the driver's license. However, penalties escalate through 4 stages: $50 base, then +$25 late penalty, +$50 additional penalty, and finally civil judgment entry.
For delivery fleets, speed cameras are the single largest source of automated violations. A route through multiple school zones can generate several tickets per day per vehicle, and drivers may not even know they were caught. Clear Plates scans for speed camera violations daily and flags them before the first penalty increase hits.
