VIOLATIONS

Expired Meter

Also known as: meter expired, expired muni-meter, meter ticket

What is an Expired Meter?

An expired meter violation is issued when a vehicle remains in a metered parking space after the purchased time has run out. This is one of the most common parking tickets in NYC, with base fines of $35 for a standard meter and $65 for a Muni-Meter. Meters are enforced Monday through Saturday in most areas, with hours varying by location.

NYC has largely transitioned from single-space coin meters to Muni-Meters (pay stations), which require drivers to display a receipt on the dashboard. ParkNYC, the city's mobile payment app, is an alternative — but expired time still results in a ticket regardless of payment method.

For fleets, expired meters are a nuisance violation that signals poor time management on routes. While individual fines are relatively low, they accumulate quickly across a fleet. A driver averaging one expired meter per day costs the fleet $700–$1,300 per month. Clear Plates tracks meter violations by driver and vehicle, helping you identify patterns and implement better time management practices on routes.
